Cannabis edibles explained
Edibles are food or drink products containing cannabis. Because the body absorbs the active compounds differently than when inhaling, the onset, duration and intensity all differ significantly.
The difference from inhaling
Inhaled cannabis reaches the bloodstream through the lungs almost immediately, and the effect is noticeable within minutes.
Eaten cannabis is absorbed through the digestive system and passes through the liver, where THC is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, a compound that reaches the brain more easily and acts more strongly. The result: it takes longer to start, lasts longer, and can feel stronger than expected.
Onset and duration
The effect usually begins after 30 minutes to two hours, sometimes longer after a full meal. It typically lasts four to eight hours, with after-effects continuing for several hours more.
Why taking more too early is the main risk
The most common cause of unpleasant experiences is taking a second portion within the first hour because nothing has happened yet. Both portions then take effect together. Always wait at least two hours before reassessing.
Storage
Edibles look like ordinary food, which poses a real risk to children and pets. Keep them in their original sealed packaging and out of reach.
